This chashaku, carved by Walter S. Hahn in April 1985, exemplifies his deep study of bamboo’s natural qualities. The scoop is accompanied by its matching tsutsu (bamboo case), inscribed in bold calligraphy with the name Honmatsu(本末), a poetic expression of the cyclical nature of tea practice—roots and twigs, beginnings and ends.

The scoop is made of medium light-yellow bamboo, accented with natural brown speckles and subtle irregularities. The tsutsu retains its warm patina, its grain highlighted by ink inscription. Together, they form a harmonious set that balances rustic naturalism with thoughtful naming.
