Edazumi is "branch" charcoal, and is used as kindling to ignite sumi charcoal for a tea ceremony fire. The edazumi is actually a small branch of carbonizes oak, azalea or camellia painted white with lime. The supply of edazumi is very limited outside of Japan, because of how fragile it is. We get some from time to time, but supply is very tenuous. Presently we have four boxes of edazumi for Furo. The size of the edazumi branch differs according to the school, but at Urasenke, it is 18cm long for the ro (sunken hearth), and 15cm long for furo (portable brazier).
